Live PAX South 2019

Friday January 18, 2019

We are in San Antonio and will be live at PAX South 2019! Both of our panels this year are on Friday!

Nostalgia vs Game Design
1:00pm @ Bobcat Theatre

Everyone has the game that consumed their childhood. You grew up playing Quake 2 mods, Civ II, or Everquest late into the night. You got obsessed with Aerobiz on the SNES or DotA (the original one). You want to recreate that experience that was so core to your gaming life. But… can you? What was it ABOUT those games that made them so perfect. Was it the game, the context, or possibly even just you? From remakes to reboots to spiritual successors, some game mechanics are best left to history.

Learn & Play: Carcassonne
3:00pm @ Learn & Play

Go deep on the strategy of Carcassonne with a lecture from Rym and Scott, hosts of the GeekNights podcast. Then stick around to face off against other attendees, putting those Carcassonne strategy tips to work.

See you there! And possibly in our forum!

Live at GaymerX East and PAX Unplugged

Wednesday October 25, 2017

We will be live at the inaugural PAX Unplugged 2017! Some of you may be old enough to remember the workshop-style talks we gave at PAXes in the past (Mastering Game Mechanics, Practical Game Theory, and several how-to-play/win events), and this is a return to that format.

Learn and WIN: Carcassonne
Saturday 11/18
Tabletop Tourney

Go deep on the strategy of Carcassonne with a lecture from Rym and Scott, hosts of the GeekNights podcast. Then stick around for a special single-elimination Carcassonne tournament and put those tips to work. Cut-throat competition armed with the most dangerous tools we can provide.

If you want to get a head start, check out our longstanding Play (Dirty) to Win talk from PAX East 2017, or our ancient How to Win at Games talk from PAX East 2011. Rym even did a solo version at PAX Australia 2014!

We are also presenting a talk (and actually taking audience questions) on game rules at GaymerX East 2017!

Writing Game Rules
Saturday 11/04
Panels B - 5411

The rules of a game literally define it. What makes a good rulebook? How about a good rule? Do you need a reference sheet? A tabletop game can "crash" just like a videogame if your rules are ambiguous.

Live at PAX West 2017!

Friday August 11, 2017

We are giving a talk on rage quits at PAX West 2017!

The Rage of the Quitter
Sunday Sept 3 @ 6:30pm
Hippogriff Theatre

The table gets flipped. The healer sits down in spawn and plays Rick Astley over the voice chat. The tournament ends in chaos. Friendships die. Why does the quitter rage so? This panel will explore the inglorious exits of gaming.

If you're from the future, and you're looking for the other talks we referenced during the panel at PAX, here they are:

Why No One will Game with You
