Episode 16 of Revolutionary Girl Utena is another one of the "Nanami Episodes." Right in the middle of the deepening mystery of the Black Rose Saga, you (appear to) take a 90* swerve into Nanami-land. But, Nanami episodes are deceiving. They present an adolescence allegory parallel to Utena's, and important themes for the overall show are embedded within them.

Here, Nanami literally and figuratively turns into a cow. Moo. And also, we learn about the instrumentality (or lack thereof) of the oppressed in their own oppression.

This is the end of the first arc of Revolutionary Girl Utena. This is the point from which everything changes. Pay attention to how every character reacts to everything that happens. How does Touga know so much? Why is Juri so calm despite his seemingly total victory? What did Anthy remember?

In this episode of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, we learn about the awful things Nanami has done in the past to preserve in her heart the love and sole attention of her brother Touga. What was Nanami fighting for truly? She certainly wasn't apologizing to Touga for trying to murder Utena after losing her duel.

We learn in this episode mostly of Touga's true intentions. He's been playing everyone all along, and his plan has finally come together. This was the last step before his expected duel with Utena. But, why are both Anthy and End of the World helping him?
