A Farewell to Arms
February 19 2009
>A Farewell to Arms, semi-autobiographical of Hemmingway himself, portrays the tragic romance of Frederic Henry, an American serving in the Italian army during the first World War, with a British nurse he meets while recovering from a wound. Bleak and brutal, it is a classic Hemmingway and a classic novel.
Why did we pick this book?Rym is a fan of Hemmingway, and wanted an excuse to read the book again, having had read it only once over a decade ago. It's a solid book, with action and romance, that hopefully would attract some of our listeners who tend to gravitate solely to science fiction and fantasy. It's also commonly excerpted for high school English classes, so there was a good chance that at least some of you were already passingly familiar.
What did we think of it?An excellent book written by an excellent author, everyone should read at least one of his novels. You could do worse than A Farewell to Arms.
