Judge Anime By Its Cover - Spring 2016

Judge Anime by its Cover
Spring 2016

You wouldn't judge a book by its cover, but anime is a whole different ball game. What if we reviewed anime SOLELY by their covers? Would these reviews be accurate? If so, why? Anime, moreso than other works in other media, seem truer to their marketing material, and it is our hypothesis that one truly can "review" anime to a great degree soley by their covers.

We review all of the upcoming Spring 2016 Anime Season based solely on a single image and a paragraph of text.

GeekNights Presents Utena: ep14

GeekNights Presents: Utena
Episode 14

Episode 14 of Revolutionary Girl Utena is the de facto start of the Black Rose Saga. The Boys of the Black Rose. Who are these new characters? Why do they look suspiciously like (and have ties to) characters we already know? Why is Anthy clearly in cahoots with the End of the World. Cahoots, and also bed. All this and more as we begin analyzing some of the meatiest episodes of Utena yet.

Our Patreon Campaign is a big part of how we've started the show again!

Pre-judged anime: Were we right?

In 2013, at Anime Boston, we reviewed all of the upcoming anime. As in, anime that had not been seen by anyone in the US. We were extremely confident in the quality of our reviews, based solely on a paragraph of text and a single image.

Now, years later, the world has seen these shows. Now, it's your turn to judge us! Were we right? Or are we just assholes? Can anime truly be reviewed by its cover alone?

GeekNights Presents Utena: ep13

GeekNights Presents: Utena
Episode 13
- Tracing a Path

Episode 13 of Revolutionary Girl Utena is a liminal episode. On one hand, it provides a denouement to the Student Council Saga (season 1), nominally explaining what happened and, to a degree, why. On the other, it raises far more disturbing questions about the true aim of these duels, setting the stage for the Black Rose Saga (season 2). Who is this man (Akio), what is his relation to Anthy or End of the World, and why is he trying to (re)awaken the Power of Dios?

GeekNights Presents: Utena
Episode 12

This is the end of the first arc of Revolutionary Girl Utena. This is the point from which everything changes. Pay attention to how every character reacts to everything that happens. How does Touga know so much? Why is Juri so calm despite his seemingly total victory? What did Anthy remember?

GeekNights Presents Utena: ep11

GeekNights Presents: Utena
Episode 11

In this episode, the eleventh of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, we explore Touga's motiviations, as well as how exactly he was able to achieve what he did. Touga's plan was meticulously put together over much of season one, and in this episode came to fruition.

GeekNights Presents Utena: ep10

GeekNights Presents: Utena
Episode 10

In this episode of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, we learn about the awful things Nanami has done in the past to preserve in her heart the love and sole attention of her brother Touga. What was Nanami fighting for truly? She certainly wasn't apologizing to Touga for trying to murder Utena after losing her duel.

We learn in this episode mostly of Touga's true intentions. He's been playing everyone all along, and his plan has finally come together. This was the last step before his expected duel with Utena. But, why are both Anthy and End of the World helping him?
