[05:46:59] <Aria> Hi Bronz|work
[05:51:48] <Bronz|work> Hello!
[05:52:12] <Aria> Well met.
[05:52:52] <Aria> Also JA12 is answering questions with ridicules specificity again
[05:53:22] <Aria> Which is par for the course of course, but its like it's like 8
[05:53:31] <Aria> And he's been up all night
[05:53:47] <Aria> But he's also always there when I'm on a regular schedule
[05:53:54] <Aria> He's just always there. Never AFK
[05:54:00] <Aria> There is no way he's not a bot!
[05:57:02] <Bronz|work> Hmmm...
[05:57:32] <Aria> I asked. He said he is currently asleep
[06:03:51] <Bronz|work> That's a pertty good answer.
[06:26:48] <Aria> is Alt-J an artist? A genre?
[06:44:51] <Bronz|work> Alt-J, stylized as alt-J or ∆,[5] is an English indie rock band formed in 2007 in Leeds, by Gwil Sainsbury (guitar/bass), Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Thom Green (drums) and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals).
[06:45:29] <Aria> I figured it out after I asked. I guess I should've written a follow up, but you seemed afk
[06:45:43] <Aria> I saw a parody (though I asked before clicking on the parody video)
[06:46:13] <Aria> The parody song was decently good, so I was excited to check out the real guy
[06:46:23] <Aria> But the real guy wasn't nearly as good as the parody guy
[06:50:57] <Bronz|work> =P
[06:55:00] <Aria> I don't think my plan is gonna work out
[06:55:22] <Aria> Having a hard time staying up already, and I have four hours to go
[06:57:50] -!- Apsup [Apsup!Apsup@hide-C3A41BC5.kortex.jyu.fi] has joined #geeknights
[06:58:00] <Aria> Is artful a common expression for "good"?
[06:58:21] <Aria> "You really have to play that new Doom, it's incredibly artful"?
[06:58:54] <Aria> Hi Apsup
[06:59:42] <Bronz|work> I don't think artful is used in that context, no...
[06:59:47] <Bronz|work> And hi Apsup
[07:00:01] <Apsup> Morning.
[07:00:23] <Apsup> Oh, this is rare. Aria up before me.
[07:00:36] <Aria> I've been up all night, actually...
[07:00:41] <Apsup> :[
[07:00:49] <Apsup> Well, still counts, I guess.
[07:01:01] <Aria> Sure! I'll take my victories where I can
[07:01:38] <Aria> On artful: That's how this guy uses it in this GDC talk. Not a very good talk. 17 minutes in, and all he has done is show successful examples of the thing he's trying to teach the audience
[07:03:00] <Aria> (Which is cinematography, or in other words, a large complex subject that you can't learn from looking at a reference gallery)
[07:03:17] <Aria> Apsup, have you played that new Watch Dogs?
[07:03:51] <Apsup> nope
[07:04:53] <Aria> I played it the day before yesterday, my perception of it so far does not match at all the way the personalities I watch have talked about it
[07:05:11] <Aria> Mostly Austin Walker, I think is who I heard talk about it
[07:05:53] <Aria> I also played Mafia 3, which is another game I had only heard Austin Walker talk about going in, and that too I didn't recognize
[07:06:28] <Aria> In Mafia's case, I didn't trust him, and it matched my perception of what it was going to be, just not perception of what Austin was trying to communicate
[07:07:28] <Aria> Both of these games share agile protagonists, and good camera, which I'm very happy with, after having played a bunch of games with slow laggy protagonists, and even more games with bad cameras recently
[07:09:01] <Aria> On the flip side, they also shared bad performance and unappealing narratives
[07:09:11] <Aria> Performance as in FPS
[07:09:52] <Aria> I guess the actor performances were fine. But I don't like any characters in either game so far, and the open world is bland and bad
[07:10:18] <Aria> Watch Dogs 2 has a good selection of clothes though! So that's really good. Two thumbs up
[07:12:47] <Aria> Also I'm very sleep deprived. Can you tell? I guess not, I always write like this.
[07:16:36] <Aria> This guy is terrible
[07:18:35] <Aria> <Picture of Hollywood-ass monotone messy garbage> "Now let's see what happens when we take out the colour grading". Next slide is a natural, vibrant, nice, very nice version of that same image. Immediately he follows up with "Not as interesting, let's change it back" and goes back to the previous imagine without giving anyone time to look at the natural looking version
[07:19:15] <Aria> What is it with people's insistence on monotone movies?
[07:22:31] <Apsup> Well, in some cases it can be a thematic thing, use of spesific color range that fits the movie's tone and themes. Or use few different colors to signify few different thigns and showing which one is dominant in a scene.
[07:23:31] <Aria> Certainly. But it should be used more subtly and sparingly than Hollywood does.
[07:24:04] <Aria> The default grade should be in service of making the picture as natural, vibrant and pretty as possible. And then you can do other things when needed
[07:24:46] <Aria> Instead of the default grade being to make everything monotone and unnaturally contrasty to cheat cohesion
[08:26:24] <Aria> https://www.reddit.com
[08:34:45] <Apsup> Why you browse /r/australia, planning on moving?
[08:35:07] <Aria> No. Though Australia isn't that bad
[08:35:39] <Aria> And I don't know, been subbed for a while. I guess just because it's foreign, but still in a language I understand
[08:43:07] <Apsup> I guess that's an explanation, as good as any.
[08:43:27] <Apsup> Well, not at good as "I live in Australia", but you know what I mean,
[08:43:34] <Bronz|work> Don't get what your post is about though.
[08:44:02] <Aria> Recently I've discovered that I really like Caribbean radio
[08:50:33] <Aria> It's funny I thought
[08:50:45] <Bronz|work> I mean, the accents are great, right?
[08:50:57] <Aria> No the post I mean
[08:51:06] <Aria> Caribbean radio also funny I suppose
[08:51:43] <Bronz|work> =P
[08:51:52] <Bronz|work> Mr. Speaker, we are for the big!
[08:52:52] <Aria> I don't like how PrequelMeme's is full of, y'know, the reddit crowd
[08:53:07] <Aria> Type of people who use the term "cuck" and "sjw"
[08:55:52] <Apsup> I think that's the overall internet shithead crew.
[08:57:12] <Apsup> Also, because I got curious after the talk about /r/Australia, I looked at /r/Finland. There is a person from UK, mentioning that they might move here and ask people tell anything. Later in the comments they have actual list of useful questions.
[08:57:24] <Apsup> Why didn't you start with those questions? I wanna ask.
[08:58:11] <Aria> Well, it's recent in the case of this subreddit. Few months ago when it was more obscure, they weren't as prevalent
[08:59:11] <Aria> Also https://www.reddit.com is the real Finland subreddit
[08:59:37] <Aria> /r/finland is a tourist trap
[08:59:40] <Apsup> I'm not sure if I want to see Finnish people meming in reddit in Finnish.
[09:00:35] <Apsup> ...ok, this might be not so bad.
[09:01:49] <Bronz|work> All of the European countries suffer under the same fate
[09:02:07] <Bronz|work> /r/Norway is just people asking where to hike, whereas /r/norge is where people post stupid news articles
[09:02:44] <Bronz|work> The only one that seems to be immune is /r/theNetherlands, actually
[09:44:57] <Aria> The Metal Gear movie is still not even filming
[09:45:06] <Aria> No wonder those things cost so much
[09:45:48] <Aria> Last update is from a few months ago, when the producer (new guy from the guy on stage at E3) said that they are currently finalizing the script
[09:46:09] <Apsup> From what I've heard a lot more movie deals are made and screenplays are written than actual movies are filmed. The filming is the expensive part anyways, paying a dude or two to write a script is pennies compared to that.
[09:46:46] <Aria> Oh for sure
[09:47:23] <Aria> But still, both this and the last guy associated with the project is a big name Hollywood producer, I'm sure he's very expensive compared to the number of people he is
[09:47:36] <Aria> And there's a bunch more people who have to sign off on all the changes
[09:47:52] <Aria> And they've got concept artists and pre viz people also I'm sure
[09:48:48] <Aria> But yeah, compared to getting a hundred people into a studio and building sets and shit, and then afterwards getting a different hundred people to do all the post, I doubt this matters too much in the grand scheme
[09:53:10] <Aria> I should learn rhythm
[09:53:24] <Aria> This guy says its useful for making games
[09:53:38] <Apsup> ...
[09:54:27] <Aria> Also, Amazon Vice President and CTO says I'm too fat to work in a professional setting.
[09:54:37] <Aria> "If your team can eat more than two pizzas, it's too large"
[09:54:46] <Aria> I could go for two pizzas right now
[09:54:57] <Bronz|work> I guess it depends on the size of a pizza?
[09:55:10] <Bronz|work> Can you eat two mizzoni's pizzas?
[09:55:15] <Aria> I assume since it's for multiple people, it's the largest available at any given pizza place
[09:55:26] <Aria> Those are larger than what you expect to be available
[09:55:28] <Apsup> But it was more than two.
[09:55:40] <Apsup> So alone you are fine, but together you are not allowed to work.
[09:56:10] <Bronz|work> Unless of course, you find someone that's lactose intollerant!
[09:56:33] <Bronz|work> Or can't eat gluten or something like that.
[09:57:24] <Aria> Apsup makes a good point
[09:58:05] <Aria> Are Pizza sizes in inches in Finland?
[09:58:16] <Apsup> I don't think so.
[09:58:41] <Apsup> I think there is just pizza and then there is family-size for big ones.
[09:58:55] <Apsup> generally
[09:59:02] <Aria> Is there Peppe's in Finland?
[09:59:14] <Apsup> I'm sure there are in some imageboards.
[09:59:20] <Apsup> give me a sec...
[09:59:44] <Aria> Peppes Pizza, the pizza chain I meant
[10:00:00] <Apsup> oh, no I don't think so.
[10:01:08] <Bronz|work> Rare pepes don't make a good pizza topping.
[10:01:14] <Aria> Okay seems to only be a Norway thing. Though strangely, also one Kuwait and China?
[10:36:25] <Aria> Noctis has 7 bones from hip to head
[10:36:51] <Aria> Does UE4 do bendy bones? Bendy bones are good
[10:40:37] <Bronz|work> 7...?
[10:40:43] <Bronz|work> Really, only seven?
[10:40:58] <Aria> Only?
[10:41:06] <Aria> I mean, he's got a bunch more for his limbs
[10:41:13] <Bronz|work> 4 for the arms, 2 for the spine...
[10:41:14] <Aria> And face
[10:41:18] <Bronz|work> Oh.
[10:41:19] <Aria> 7 for spine
[10:41:26] <Aria> Spine also includes head. Two in the head
[10:41:27] <Bronz|work> You're discounting face and arms and hands.
[10:41:36] <Bronz|work> Ok well, fair enough then.
[10:41:36] <Aria> And legs
[10:41:57] <Bronz|work> Well, you explicitly excluded legs by saying "upwards from hips".
[10:42:04] <Aria> Right
[10:42:05] <Bronz|work> But implicitly excluded the arms for some reason?
[10:42:45] <Aria> Because I didn't want you to have to count the number of bones that go into fingers and stuff
[10:42:49] <Bronz|work> To be fair though, IRL humans have 33 bones in the spine.
[10:43:09] <Aria> Sure, but video game guys tend to have less
[10:43:46] <Aria> I mean, it's not crazy, I'm not sure why I even mentioned
[10:43:50] <Aria> Its like 2 more than I expected
[10:46:38] <Aria> "constantupgrader2 weeks ago
[10:46:38] <Aria> Very interesting. Games are always much more complex than I initially think."
[10:46:53] <Bronz|work> I mean, that's also still true for me.
[10:46:57] <Aria> What?
[10:46:58] <Aria> How?
[10:47:04] <Aria> This talk is on AI
[10:47:20] <Bronz|work> Just in general, all the stuff that goes into making them.
[10:47:21] <Aria> How can you not have the exact opposite reaction?
[10:48:07] <Aria> Like to me, whenever I see these things, at first I think they're magic
[10:48:26] <Aria> And then I hear how they're made and I go "Man that shit is held together by strings"
[10:49:04] <Bronz|work> I mean, I feel the same way, except I go like "Wow, that string is incredibly good, for how much it sucks"
[10:51:12] <Aria> Like, "Man the enemies are so smart how they choose to dive roll only when it's the most best perfect tactical combat move. So smarts." "Yeah we wanted a combat roll because they have those in movies. I got this animation. I hooked it up so it was a 1% chance of triggering in every frame. Sometimes it breaks and he just keeps rolling, so I do a check if he has rolled thrice in a roll, and if he has, then he just runs out of view
[10:51:12] <Aria> as fast as possible and despawns."
[10:55:18] <Aria> The first quote is me, the second is the guy who made the AI for when to combat roll
[10:58:50] <Bronz|work> Remember the Rockets, Rockets, Rockets! talk?
[10:59:18] <Aria> Yes exactly
[10:59:24] <Bronz|work> "Yeah, I just made the AI drive circles around the player, everyone thought the AI was super smart"

[13:07:42] <Apsup> Hi. I was away.
[13:07:54] <Bronz|work> That's fine, not everyone's perfect.
[13:15:58] <Apsup> I feel like taking a nap, but also I feel like more Persona.
[13:16:17] <Bronz|work> Ah, but will you be able to fully enjoy Persona if you feel like a nap?
[13:16:27] <Bronz|work> You want all of Persona to be top Persona time, right?
[13:16:51] <Apsup> It's gonna be like 100+ hours, I don't think it can all be at 100%
[13:16:57] <Bronz|work> =P
[13:17:35] <Apsup> Well, now I'm watching a video about making a safe out of cardboard.
