[09:09:16] <Aria> Hi
[09:11:04] <Bronz|work> Oh hi!
[09:11:15] <Bronz|work> I bought a Ciabatta in the cafeteria.
[09:11:23] <Bronz|work> But it's one of those "Finish baking at home" types...
[09:11:27] <Bronz|work> So it's not very good?
[09:11:46] <Aria> Can you microwave it at work maybe?
[09:16:01] <Bronz|work> I'll have to when my first break comes up.
[09:22:03] -!- Apsup [Apsup!Apsup@hide-C3A41BC5.kortex.jyu.fi] has joined #geeknights
[09:22:42] <Aria> Hello
[09:24:20] <Apsup> Morning
[09:26:16] <Bronz|work> How goes?
[09:26:21] <Apsup> ZZZZZ
[09:26:22] <Apsup> tired
[09:29:40] <Aria> Ryu Hayabusa is cool
[09:29:47] <Aria> There needs to be more games about cool people.
[09:29:51] <Aria> There's like... 5
[09:30:09] <Apsup> Different people have different definitions of cool people.
[09:30:10] <Aria> There are hundreds about stupid people I don't like
[09:31:01] <Bronz|work> y'know, if everyone could just agree on who is cool, that'd be so much easier.
[09:31:27] <Aria> Yeah but I mean, who thinks Shulk is cool?
[09:37:53] <Aria> Have you guys seen that video of the lady yelling at her video game?
[09:38:00] <Aria> It's pretty good
[09:38:54] <Bronz|work> I haven't.
[09:39:02] <Aria> http://t.cn
[09:39:22] <Aria> Maybe skip in like halfway
[09:39:47] <Bronz|work> Oh hey, look at that tiny link.
[09:39:55] <Aria> Oh yeah also audio levels all over the place
[09:41:14] <Apsup> Oh this one. Yes I've seen seen.
[09:48:44] <Aria> Hey Bronz|work, you smart, what happens if I fry sausages in the fish pan?
[09:50:22] <Bronz|work> Well... there's fish-scales all over it
[09:50:40] <Bronz|work> Those will get burned further into the pan, making it more difficult to clean, and also some wills stick to your sausage.
[09:50:50] <Bronz|work> But you'll have cooked sausages...
[09:51:17] <Aria> So you're saying to use a different pan?
[09:51:53] <Bronz|work> I would reccomend it.
[09:52:00] <Bronz|work> Or at least get the fish parts out first.
[09:52:19] <Bronz|work> Slight cleaning would be enough, you don't have to get it 100% clean.
[09:52:34] <Aria> Sure
[09:54:01] <Aria> Okay but anyway, the guy in Infamous or whatever wasn't designed to be cool
[09:54:07] <Aria> He was designed to be some bloke
[09:54:57] <Aria> Ryu Hayabusa doesn't do anything other than be cool. They didn't give him any human properties
[10:06:11] <Apsup> I've been watching an episode of half here and there on the Twitch power rangers marathon. It's funny how it has gone from "stuff in normal town" into full on sci-fi show.
[10:06:52] <Aria> Probably because they switched stock footage source at some point in between
[10:07:13] <Apsup> Yea, I think every newly named series is from different show, at least.
[10:07:18] <Aria> And come on! What other protagonist waltzes into the boss room, and just stares down the boss while he is trying to rile up all the trash mobs
[10:10:14] <Aria> The best you're gonna get is the same scene where protag shouts a bunch of cringey 'I'm better than you'-s, at which point it loses all potency
[10:13:13] <Aria> He doesn't walk away from explosions, he casually glances away right as they start
[10:51:16] <Aria> Reviews for that new Mass Effect are good. I thought it was supposed to be bad?
[10:52:58] <Bronz|work> REVIEWS ARE RIGGED, MAAAAAN
[10:56:59] <Apsup> Wonky visuals and animations and bugs don't usually ruin a game for people. Especially Bioware game.
[10:58:06] <Apsup> Oh no! I just realized that catching a start of a season is an issue. Things are happening and I'm invested in Power Rangers, I can't stop watching.
[10:58:32] <Bronz|work> Oh no!
[10:58:45] <Bronz|work> Rita has her hooks in you!
[10:59:00] <Apsup> Rita hasn't been in the seires for a while.
[11:01:26] <Aria> I'm watching this GDC talk on animating Destiny
[11:01:40] <Aria> And its like baby's first look at a video game
[11:02:05] <Aria> "When animating the first person arms, move them sometimes"
[11:02:26] <Aria> "Don't block the screen with the gun during the reload"
[11:03:46] <Aria> "Make sure the reticule is visible when players go into aiming mode, because when they go into aiming mode, they're trying to see what enemies overlap with the reticule. I know it's really tempting to put some cool hand gestures there, but don't"
[11:03:47] <Bronz|work> That's because Bungee has a manual written out for new animators.
[11:05:10] <Aria> "Animations should play when players hit the button. The start of the animation shouldn't be the player character coming to the conclusion that it's the right action, the player human already made that decision. So remove that first bit of the animation where the character is weighing his options"
[11:05:43] <Apsup> Now I want "ponder possible options" button in a game.
[11:05:52] <Bronz|work> I mean, that one seems very specific...
[11:06:07] <Aria> I assume it was a problem at Bungie.
[11:08:37] <Aria> "When moving weapons off screen, move them too far because some weapons are larger than others, and since it's off screen, the player won't know that the character is moving off small weapon unnaturally far back"
[11:11:25] <Aria> "What we always used to do, was that melee would always hit on frame 3. It was law at bungie. So anyway, at of nowhere, one time we tried hitting on frame five, and it was actually a lot better, so now we always hit on frame 5. The point is, sometimes you need to try new things when animating."
[11:15:52] <Aria> Holy shit!
[11:15:56] <Aria> This is the guy!
[11:16:05] <Bronz|work> ?
[11:16:15] <Aria> This guy is the shaking fucking camera when doing basic things guy!
[11:16:31] <Bronz|work> Oh noooo
[11:16:50] <Aria> I thought who could this mythical person be that is seemingly animating every CoD who thinks you bang your head into every surface when bending down to sit down in a chair
[11:17:06] <Aria> He strapped a gopro to his head and did some walking/running/turning
[11:17:17] <Aria> and then replicated all the camera movements 1-1
[11:17:51] <Aria> He goes on to say that it was disorientating and bad and then they dropped it
[11:18:00] <Aria> But seriously, who doesn't realize that without trying?
[11:18:18] <Aria> First off, the gopro is too high up so you get extra swivel
[11:18:58] <Aria> Secondly, you know what all your muscles are doing in a human body. In a game, you're moving your thumb and that's it
[11:31:05] <Aria> I should be an animator.
[11:35:30] <Aria> ... Okay so not too upset about this, because I know games are patchworks sometimes. But Halo Reach had 25 grenade throw animation assets that are perceived by the player as one animation
[11:36:26] <Aria> They're not unique, but they are unique files. So one variant with that starts with you lower each possible combination of weapons, and then the same animation of you bringing a grenade into the screen and chucking it
[11:36:46] <Aria> And variants for first and third person, and LOD varient I assume
[11:37:18] <Aria> So when this guy was going to make a chance to the grenade throw, he had to make the change across 25ish assets
[11:37:30] <Aria> That seems woefully inefficient.
[11:38:24] <Bronz|work> Indeed, that seems bad.
[11:38:47] <Bronz|work> Bad and horribly prone to errors.
[11:38:52] <Aria> Right?
[11:39:14] <Aria> Also, even if you can't figure out any way to do it with one animation file--
[11:39:29] <Aria> You should still be able to generate all 25 with a script after animating it once.
[11:39:53] <Bronz|work> Yeah...
[11:40:25] <Bronz|work> Or maybe have 25 'lead-up' animations, and then one actual grenade throw animation that plays afterwards?
[11:40:31] <Bronz|work> I dunno, there's a zillion things you could do.
[11:40:46] <Aria> They fixed it for Destiny
[11:40:52] <Aria> And he explained how they do it
[11:41:05] <Bronz|work> ... Yes?
[11:41:28] <Aria> (It's the obvious sane way that either of us would've defaulted to. It's not part of the story. The story is just how they were doing it before it stupid)
[11:44:13] <Aria> also, my spelling today, gosh
[11:52:23] <Aria> "How did you make <specific animation> look so good?"
[11:53:38] <Aria> "By just kinda balancing the timing and the posing and physicality of that, with kinda, working with a designer to get that as good as possible, that's kinda how we did it"
[11:54:01] <Aria> Thanks.
[11:56:14] <Aria> Follow up question was "What did the designer do? <on that animation>" and he replied with "I'm not actually sure. But yknow, it's when you hand it off to someone with a different skillset, and they push it that extra mile. He did a great job"
[11:56:17] <Aria> Great!
[12:03:08] <Bronz|work> ....
[12:03:40] <Bronz|work> We should get that guy to do a talk instead.
[12:16:40] <Bronz|work> Hey Aria, we don't have food in the house, right?
[12:16:53] <Bronz|work> Can you order groceries online? I'll go past the store.
[12:17:31] <Aria> Yes
[12:51:50] <Apsup> The characters in the new Mass Effect glance around awkwardly while talking.
[12:52:34] <Aria> I do that too
[12:52:35] <Apsup> And maybe I shouldn't talk as I'm not best with eyecontact, but it just looks really odd. I don't want to invoke uncanny valley unnesserily, but it's kinda there.
[12:57:28] <Bronz|work> Hey, remember that musician guy that was on Quizdan?
[12:57:33] <Bronz|work> Apperantly, he's a jerk.
[12:58:21] <Bronz|work> Therese had a friend who dated him.
[13:13:58] <Aria> Not sure if I trust Therese's friend
[13:37:23] <Bronz|work> Therese met him also a couple of times.
[13:37:45] <Bronz|work> She said that he started out somewhat humble, but after a few minutes, he had the biggest ego.
[13:38:12] <Bronz|work> Said things like "I can get any girl that I like" (while in a relationship with Therese's friend).
[13:38:12] <Aria> Huh.
[13:38:53] <Aria> I mean, that's probably true, so it could've been said with a non-obvious intent or context
[13:54:21] <Bronz|work> Not the way Therese tells it.
[13:56:52] <Aria> Sure

[16:52:27] <Aria> So I'm watching this GDC talk about 8bit and 8bitish art
[16:52:49] <Aria> 27 minutes in, the entire talk up to this point has just been him bragging about his art
[16:53:55] <Aria> Just playing a slide show and commenting over it. "This entire thing was done while I was in a handstand with a blindfold on and walking up hill both ways!"
[16:55:01] <Aria> "Oh you young kids today don't know what it's like to have to work for your art! You couldn't fit one pixel into the memory limitations I made this art for!"
[16:56:02] <Aria> Actually, he is advocating that it's easier when you have limitations, because it forces you to think out of the box and learn the tools better. But whatever, the part about the entire talk up to this point being a slide show is still accurate
[17:00:33] <Bronz|work> Ok, leaving for home, bye
[17:00:56] <Aria> Bye
