[03:52:19] <Coby> I'm torn on whether or not to buy Secret World
[03:53:17] <Coby> That last day with it was the best because of how much faster everything was going between enemies being removed from damage sponge status and quick travel within the field being added
[03:53:55] <Coby> On the other hand I feel like I'd be playing a lot of it alone because I'm not quick to make friends or be sociable
[03:54:01] <Churba> Okay, let's hash it out. Tell me about your experience.
[03:54:47] <Churba> But, I will tell you first off - that's okay. I've solo'ed 99% of the time in the game, and that's almost entirely in the old, much harder game before the New player experience gubbins. It's built so that you can play solo just as easy.
[03:55:07] <Coby> Well the first two days on shotgun templar I thought the world itself they introduce you to is great, and then I got to Kingsmouth with standard mobs that felt a little too strong and the quest pickup restrictions making me back track a lot for no reason
[03:55:07] -!- hitstun has quit [Connection reset by peer]
[03:55:53] <Coby> too strong as in too much health, not in how much damage they dealt
[03:56:46] <Churba> Oh yeah, I had that back in the day. to the point where if I'm getting frustrated, I still rock back to kingsmouth and just spend a while fucking up all the stuff that was such a bastard for me early on
[03:57:04] <Coby> probably wasn't helping that the majority of my moveset was aoes, which according to patch notes were doing roughly 33% damage compared to comparable single targets
[03:58:14] <Churba> Oh yeah, the patch did change that up a bit. Feck, I'm going to have to play with my build a bit.
[03:58:36] <Churba> Then again, I should do that anyway, considering I'm running pretty much a straight bodyguard deck\
[03:58:48] -!- hitstun [hitstun!hitstun@F6B70642:CD40EEA4:1D1270BE:IP] has joined #geeknights
[03:58:52] <Coby> Along with that, weapon upgrades that seemed substantial didn't result in much of a change in combat. First shotgun I had said 25 for damage rating and the second was over 50 and normal mobs took maybe one hit less if I landed a crit
[03:59:46] <Coby> just no sense of progression, not helped by the fact that every non-major story quest is repeatable
[04:00:27] <Churba> Agreed on that point - the first area does struggle to find a pace. This does get better in later areas, where even amongst side-quests there's some sense of things moving and happening in the world.
[04:02:53] zz_matchastrawberry is now known as matchastrawberry
[04:02:56] <Coby> just before patch went up I made a pistol/elemental illuminati who I used most of the time on the last day and everything was going much faster but that could be more because of the patch than weapon selection
[04:03:29] <Coby> speaking of weapons, did not appreciate being a templar and picking up a sword and doing some wuxia nonsense. Get some faction identity other than gear color
[04:04:23] <Coby> outside materials says Templars got the old world magic, Illuminati is experimenting with new stuff, and Dragon is doing whatever
[04:04:26] <Coby> show it in gameplay
[04:08:05] matchastrawberry is now known as zz_matchastrawberry
[04:09:28] <Coby> then again, I guess the philosophies of the three sides aren't really present in the play to play game
[04:09:47] <Coby> Just in the flavor text of particular missions
[04:12:40] zz_matchastrawberry is now known as matchastrawberry
[04:14:50] <Churba> Sort of, there's some other stuff - Some missions will have different objectives and reasons for objectives depending on faction
[04:18:39] <Churba> I do agree that it would have been nice to see some different animations on attacks by faction.
[04:19:10] matchastrawberry is now known as zz_matchastrawberry
[04:23:30] <Coby> Even just aesthetic differences would be nice
[04:25:55] <Coby> if not weapon classes being different based on faction. Guns could be universal because they're guns but it feels like chaos magic should be restricted to dragon, elemental to templar and blood to illuminati
[04:26:38] <Coby> and templar swords should be either arming swords or two handers
[04:27:54] <Coby> To me it feels like swords as they are are fine for illuminati as well as dragon because I can see people in illuminati seeing themselves as action movie heroes and doing flashy nonsense like that and like when you cross your arms for some pistol moves
[04:38:31] <Coby> It feels like more positive than negative overall, and most of my complaints are kind of nitpicky stuff about aesthetics
[04:41:12] <Coby> I really enjoyed the puzzle stuff though one of them didn't exactly mesh well into its solution. Maybe I missed something in the painting but what just felt like was a passage telling me to look at a clock was also telling me to look at a bible and then use the bible passage to look at the Priest House
[04:53:18] <Churba> I'm not on board with restricting weapon classes, but that doesn't mean they have to be asthetically the same - for example, a chaos focus that's a tangled headphone cord could easily be dragon, while a templar is reading a necronomicon-style old bound book, and the illuminati throw up some sort of math-related thing.
[04:54:12] <Churba> Oh yeah, investigation missions are like that - It's often a little more obvious in hindsight, but they're made to be tricksy like that. Not ambiguous, but you do have to put together which of the potential meanings is the correct one.
[04:54:19] <Churba> Again, something they got better at.
[04:55:07] <open_sketch> what we talkin aboot?
[04:56:12] -!- Neito has quit [Ping timeout: 183 seconds]
[04:59:50] <Coby> Yeah, the other investigations I did were generally better about putting up the context of the clues you were given.
[05:00:06] <Coby> Like I said, probably missed something in the painting
[05:00:11] zz_matchastrawberry is now known as matchastrawberry
[05:02:24] <Coby> I'm also pretty bad about thinking a thing will be important but a part I skimmed over was the real info.

[05:08:07] <Churba> Sketch: Secret world stuff. Figuring out if Coby wants to buy it or not
[05:24:28] <Churba> I wish I could have showed you some of the later areas. Cairo is wicked, as is transylvania.
[05:24:34] <Churba> I haven't been to tokyo yet
[05:27:53] <Churba> If you're on the fence, you could always just wait for a sale. It goes on sale at the usual times, and sometimes amazon will have them out of the blue.
[05:31:29] <Coby> June 23rd would be a big cut off date for me
[05:32:00] <Coby> since then I'm going full in back to ARR with the expansion
[05:32:54] <Coby> and some time next month the main story patch
[05:34:22] <Coby> or was that this month?
[05:34:27] <Churba> Well, that's the tidy thing with Secret world - buy once, no subscription
[05:34:34] <Coby> Yeah
[05:35:03] <Coby> I'd probably still be into ARR if relic weapon wasn't the worst thing ever
[05:36:42] <Coby> and I made the poor decision to pursue one
[05:36:55] <Coby> got to stage... four?
[05:38:18] <Coby> First stage pretty simple quest; go find the busted weapon, kill some stuff for mats to fix it up a bit, kill 24 guys and a boss to test it out, kill three hard mode bosses and get an endgame token purchase thing and done
[05:38:44] <Coby> stage 2 buy three things
[05:39:15] <Coby> stage 3 - grind out random events to get twelve drops, this stage is either immediately completed or eternal based on RNG and I hated it
[05:40:13] <Coby> stage 4 - buy books for way too many tokens and then do the stuff it says. This will total in kill 900 mobs, completing 21 events, dungeons and quests and burned me out for a while
[05:40:49] <Coby> stage 5 that I'm on now is first buy some ink to make a scroll to enchant the weapon and to enchant the weapon you need 75 alexandrite and 75+ materia
[05:41:05] <Coby> it lets you choose the stat spread on the weapon, but at the same time
[05:41:18] <Coby> 75 dailies/fate grinding for alexandrite
[05:41:59] <Coby> and either spending about fifty million on materia or grinding out gear in the hopes of making it yourself
[05:42:41] <Coby> stage 6 is stage 5 repeated but for only 15 alexandrite and materia after grinding out weapon exp with endgame content
[05:43:15] <Coby> stage 7 this huge quest line including aspects of stages 3, 5, and 6
[05:43:26] <Coby> and then the final step is just 6 again
[05:43:55] <Coby> Or you can be good at the game and fight Bahamut for a better weapon straight up
[05:43:59] <Coby> assuming he drops it
[05:47:45] <Coby> apparently my dps is up to snuff for that stuff, but I run Dragoon which is generally frowned upon in hardcore raiding because they don't have much going for them in debuffs or general utility
[05:48:17] <Coby> just damage, and monk can be higher dps and also have an infinitely maintainable Int debuff
[05:48:25] <Coby> which is pretty good when all of the monsters are casting magic
[05:48:38] <Churba> It only clicked you were talking about Final fantasy when you said materia
[05:49:06] <Churba> All I know about ARR - There's some real dumb motherfuckers in raids.
[05:49:20] <Coby> There's real dumb motherfuckers in everything
[05:49:56] <Churba> I was listening to nine's commentary about a raid yesterday, it could be summed up in a word, and that word is "abysmal"
[05:50:27] <Coby> Only if your expectations for people is "Not retarded"
[05:51:06] <Coby> If you expect nothing then they will not disappoint you
[05:51:08] <Churba> I suppose I do need to adress my unrealistic expectations
[05:51:19] <Churba> I can't get into subscription games. I have this thing where I tend to not be able to play for a stretch of time, sometimes as long as a few monhs, and I abhor the idea of paying for that.
[05:51:45] <Coby> I can see that
[05:52:02] <Coby> ARR keeps a solid content update clip, at least
[05:52:38] <Coby> If they weren't putting out three dungeons every two or three months I'd probably be complaining about sub since I don't buy into the "it's to maintain the servers" line
[05:53:24] <Coby> three dungeons, a raid, some side quests like moogle mail that expands npc backstories and quality of life stuff like new furniture and some utilities.
[05:55:11] <Coby> june update is the first paid expansion, adding three jobs, a whole new story arc, new raids, new zones, new race, they said content amount is comparable to ARR's release so 12 or 13 dungeons?
[05:55:33] <Coby> flying mounts, and I guess a ton of FF 4 and 6 references
[05:55:39] <Coby> since the floating continent is in there
[05:55:57] <Coby> with a flash shot of the warring triad monument in the latest trailer
[05:56:43] <Coby> the 24 man raids for the realm reborn arc were a huge sendup to 3, being the crystal tower and world of darkness
[05:56:46] <Churba> That's a pretty fair whack of content, depending on the price
[05:56:53] <Coby> $40
[05:57:28] <Churba> Not so bad, I guess. Level with traditional MMO expansions
[05:57:30] <Coby> unless you want the dragon statue, amano artbook, soundtrack, dvd and whatever else goes into the collector's editionwhich will probably be somehting like $150
[05:57:52] <Coby> oh, and level cap increase to 60 complete with new job story quest arcs
[05:58:39] <Churba> But I guess I'm a little spoiled by TSW, with episodes of similar size(Usually new zones, new raids, new story arc section, new quests, new gear, all fully voiced and with cutscenes), for a tenner each.
[05:59:06] <Coby> that kind of stuff comes with the patches that come with the subscription
[05:59:09] <Churba> with 30 collector's editions, that get you more stuff, like a month's subscription, extra exclusive wardrobe gubbins, so on.
[05:59:25] <Churba> 30 dollar, that is
[06:00:26] <Churba> Wait, isn't this version of Final fantasy the one with cars?
[06:00:31] <Coby> so if you want to go by sub to content release it's something like $28 for three dungeons, gear, and whatever general content came with that period.
[06:01:00] <Coby> They got a few different teams working concurrently, some on housing stuff, some on crafter things, others on the raids, and others on main story
[06:01:35] <Churba> And the brother who looks dead set like travis touchdown
[06:01:40] <Coby> Jan, Feb, March patch bloc is ARR's closing arc going into Heavensward so we got the first half of the finale along with three dungeons in january
[06:02:14] <Coby> Gold Saucer with triple triad, chocobo races and a bunch of little prizes in Feb, and then the 2.58 patch will be the story closer with I don't know what else
[06:03:01] <Churba> Oh, no, wrong one. The mmo is 14, the cars are in 15
[06:03:10] <Coby> Plus, ARR's the first time I really like hotkey based combat systems. A lot of people I've seen really into MMO's complain it's too slow with the 2.5sec base global cooldown
[06:03:17] <Coby> but it allows for more mechanical stacking
[06:04:00] <Coby> that and there's autoattacks instead of mash standard attack forever
[06:04:21] <Churba> I think I'd almost consider subscribing to a final fantasy game if I could have a bitching camaro
[06:04:56] <Coby> What was the one I played... the end result was basically the same, you were constantly mashing your basic attack and then just hitting bigger attacks as they came off of cooldown
[06:06:09] <Churba> I think we've ended up on seperate tangents somehow
[06:06:15] <Coby> So I guess it's "faster" in that the global was quicker but if it's only used for the spammable attack I don't think it's honestly that different
[06:06:50] <Coby> I kind of ended up going off on a different thing about why I find ARR enjoyable compared to most MMO's
[06:07:12] <Coby> and you thought I was talking about Nomura's Husbando Drive
[06:08:59] <Coby> How often do Secret World updates come out?
[06:09:20] <Churba> General updates, or big content updates?
[06:09:22] <Coby> I never see people talking about it but the server seemed populated enough?
[06:09:28] <Coby> either
[06:10:11] <Coby> Nobody ever talks in Kingsmouth
[06:10:26] <Coby> but I see them running around, stealing my quest items
[06:11:20] <Coby> I'm not a fan of that, either. You fight the mob around the quest item pickup and some dickbag comes along and takes it, and by the time it pops back up so has the mob
[06:13:22] <Churba> General updates, every few weeks. Usually bugfixes, small content updates, so on, not counting events. Big updates, every few months or so, usually bringing big areas along with. IT came out with Episodes one to four included(but not released) with initial purchase, the first four came fast, and the rest slowly released between march 2013 and december last year. A rough guess is about two or three a year, and they're a mix of free a
[06:14:16] <Churba> For example, if you don't own Issues 9-10, you can still go to tokyo, pick up some new gear, do a few missions, stuff like that, but you can't do the raids or most of the story missions.
[06:14:54] <Churba> And the areas are usually closed off at first, but open up later.
[06:14:57] <Coby> a mix of free what?
[06:15:13] <Coby> "and they're a mix of free a"
[06:15:20] <Churba> Oh, sorry
[06:15:27] <Churba> Forgot that there's a character limit on this
[06:15:43] <Churba> It read "nd they're a mix of free and paid content."
[06:17:09] <Coby> Ah, okay.
[06:17:58] <Coby> Since they're called Issues I'm guessing that's what's being sold on the site that looked like comics
[06:18:28] <Churba> Story stuff, raids, some areas are closed off if you don't have the DLC, but any mechanics, some general areas, new weapons and so on are all availiable to you, even if you don't own the DLC. For example, if you don't own The Black Signal, you can still get the shit for the AEGIS system.
[06:22:08] <Churba> Yep, that's the ones - they have comics that go with each issue, IIRC
[06:22:34] <Coby> Totally unrelated thing. I want to see a modern depiction of a dragon to be like the old paintings. Where it's an angry fuckoff scorpiondog or a miserable little lizard-ish thing
[06:23:01] <Coby> Back when they were depictions of "Nature is dumb and we should kill all of it"
[06:23:07] <Churba> That would be cool.
[06:24:09] <Churba> Totally unrelated side note of my own - I was pretty surprised Dave remembered who I was yesterday, let alone that I was Australian
[06:24:42] <Coby> None of which were ever any bigger than a normal dog, either
[06:24:57] <Coby> nothing majestic or powerful about them, just pitiful miserable things
[06:25:50] <Coby> I don't recall much of the stream because of world of darkness. Also because I capped off my day by thinking my shoulders were just sore, so I put some icyhot on it
[06:25:53] <Coby> it was not sore
[06:25:55] <Coby> it was sunburn
[06:26:03] <Coby> You do not put icyhot on sunburn
[06:26:30] <Churba> I'll have you know, I'm much bigger than a normal dog
[06:26:45] <Churba> I cannot account for severely abnormal dogs, however
[06:26:57] <Coby> http://uploads6.wikiart.org
[06:27:13] <Coby> Most of the Saint George and the Dragon paintings show what I'm talking about
[06:27:53] <Coby> http://upload.wikimedia.org
[06:28:27] <Coby> I think the princess was supposed to be captive to the dragon? But here sh'es got it on a leash so i don't know what's going on
[06:28:31] <Churba> Goddamnit george why are you killing that second one. It's clearly tame, that woman has it on a leach
[06:28:39] <Churba> Leash, rather
[06:28:54] <Churba> Just going around the countryside fucking up people's pets, what an asshole
[06:29:43] <Coby> If I remember right this was possibly a depiction of the crusades somehow
[06:29:47] <Coby> the dragon is muslims
[06:30:12] <Churba> Man, old times english people were WELL fucked up
[06:32:50] <Coby> A friend of mine has been telling me about Russian history
[06:33:15] <Coby> it's a lot like western european history but the same stuff happens 200 years later and is twenty times as fucked up
[06:33:47] <Coby> Their greatest technological achievement for a long time was getting a german queen
[06:34:35] <Coby> and now it's time to sleep

[11:09:14] <Apsup> There.
[11:10:44] <Bronz|work> Y'know, that did make me feel better, thanks!
[12:45:02] <Apsup> Did you know that buying phones is hard. Well, buying isn't the hard part, finding a good one to buy is.
[12:45:38] <Bronz|work> I consider that part of the buying process.
[12:45:46] <Bronz|work> Buying laptops is also really hard.
[12:46:31] <Apsup> I guess so. Kinda similar thing. Lot's of models and such and lots of things to compare.
[12:47:04] <Apsup> Also the physical element of both is kida important, but this modern buy everything online world makes those elements hard to assess.
[12:56:41] <Bronz|work> Yup, exactly
[12:56:50] <Bronz|work> Y'know what my dad told me when I was buying my laptop?

[12:58:59] <Apsup> Although, I might have narroved my choises down to two.
[12:59:29] <Apsup> Two budget priced, android phones with minor issues.
[13:07:05] <Bronz|work> See, the thing is, you say "A phone between 200 and 400", right? Then you go to the verizon store, and look at all the phones, and go "Hmm, this one's alright".

[15:40:52] <Bronz|work> I wish I wasn't at work so I could look at youtubes and such.
[15:48:31] <Coby> Hi Bronz
[15:49:14] <Apsup> ...Virtue's Last Reward just throw a reference/mention of the board game Agricola.
[15:58:36] <Coby> I wouldn't remember
[15:59:24] <Coby> I remember only megaspoilers and a dumb color based puzzle that I needed help with because colorblindness
[16:01:34] <Apsup> Ye it was a stupid throwaway joke. It didn't even make sense, asterisk and agricola are nowhere near each other.
[16:21:39] <Coby> Bloodborne has a pilebunker
[16:23:01] <Bronz|work> Oh really?
[16:24:53] <Coby> More like a flick out blade than a piston spike, but it's still the same effect
[16:25:11] <Coby> a box that sits on your arm with a high power, short range weapon that fires out
