Back
[00:00:15] <Victor-Frost> That was hot shit backin the 28.8 days
[00:00:26] <Coldguy> 53
[00:00:32] <Victor-Frost> Especially the ones that were animated if you could scroll really fast
[00:00:38] <Victor-Frost> Damn it.
[00:00:44] <Victor-Frost> I bought at 94
[00:00:54] <Victor-Frost> my village is buying at 63
[00:00:58] <Coldguy> I can open up if you want to sell the lychees
[00:01:01] <GauntletWizard> man, that's way too high to buy
[00:01:05] <Victor-Frost> Sure
[00:01:26] <Victor-Frost> Nah, the lowest sell price from joan is 90
[00:01:48] <Coldguy> I tend to not do the stalk market
[00:01:58] <GauntletWizard> is it?
[00:02:08] <GauntletWizard> I am misremembering the numbers
[00:02:59] <Victor-Frost> The stalk market is how I'm catching up on public works projects. I've already got a bridge and my stage 2 house, now I'm funding a fountain and want to BUILD ALL THE THINGS
[00:07:08] <Victor-Frost> Bringing Katie with me, Coldguy
[00:07:16] <Coldguy> ok
[00:09:36] <Victor-Frost> I don't have any emote yet

[04:26:17] <GauntletWizard> I miss the early 00's and AMVs from that era
[04:26:23] <GauntletWizard> It is probably entirely nostalgia
[04:36:10] <Coldguy> Just finished Coatume Quest 1 again

[16:31:51] <Rym> The cycling expansion idea is big
[16:31:58] <Rym> I've never seen that before
[16:32:12] <Rym> Magic just phased anything older than 2 or so expansions out entirely forever
[16:33:53] <pence> Magic has a few different formats. For now, Standard is the last two years' worth... Modern is kind of the scope they're proposing with LCGs, a few years' worth
[16:34:18] <Rym> There used to be Type 0, I, and II
[16:34:34] <pence> yeah, they gave them slightly friendlier names
[16:34:44] <Rym> II was, at least at the time, the current base set, the previous base set, and the most recent two expansions
[16:35:11] <Rym> So back when the onion was on my belt, that was Revised, Fourth Edition, The Dark, and Fallen Empires
[16:35:14] <pence> type 0 became legacy, type 1 became vintage, and type 2 became standard... or something similar
[16:35:40] <Rym> Fourth Edition was mostly identical to Revised. Cards were printed darker, still had white borders
[16:36:03] <pence> oh right, and the thing I'm forgetting is that the core sets aren't cycling, and neither are the 'big' expansions, which is kind of bizarre
[16:36:54] <pence> The Dark and Fallen Empires... now I feel young
[16:37:06] <pence> my first magic cards were a booster of ice age cards
[16:37:15] <pence> I didn't realize that wouldn't be enough to actually play a game
[16:38:59] <Rym> I played Spellfire as well
[16:39:01] <Rym> And Jyhad
[16:39:05] <Rym> And the Star Wars CCG
[16:39:24] <pence> I had Rage, and Marvel Overpower
[16:39:29] <pence> I never actually played Rage
[16:42:28] <Rym> What? Mana Burn doesn't exist in magic anymore
[16:42:29] <Rym> Wow
[16:42:48] <pence> nope! and damage doesn't go on the stack (alternately: there is a stack)
[16:43:44] <pence> I forget if you're allowed to rearrange cards in your graveyard now...
[16:45:20] <pence> I still remember the first card in the first pack I opened was http://gatherer.wizards.com

[17:10:14] <spacejam> i just saw hunter7 in a completely unrelated chatroom
[17:10:17] <spacejam> is this some sort of meme echo
[17:51:48] <Victor-Frost> echoooo
[17:55:17] <Rym> you can go hunter2 my hunter2-ing hunter2
[17:59:25] <Apsup> First I didn't remember what hunter2 was, but that brought it back to mind.

[18:10:58] <apreche> yes, this IRC is now much better at helping get through the work day
[18:11:59] <pence> today is my netrunner day, so I'm pretty good
[18:12:24] <Asnabel> Hi all
[18:12:28] <apreche> Here's a vastly superior M:TG Skeleton
[18:12:36] <apreche> https://i.imgur.com
[18:13:21] <pence> yeah, I actually thought the card I had opened was drudge skeletons, too. I had to look and confirm there were no drudges in ice age though
[18:14:03] <pence> Summon Dead
[18:14:24] <apreche> I don't remember the exact first card
[18:14:28] <apreche> but itw as probably something like this
[18:14:57] <apreche> https://i.imgur.com
[18:15:01] <apreche> that was definitely in the first pack
[18:15:04] <apreche> that I opened
[18:15:37] <pence> probably because you had to go look up what Bands meant
[18:18:53] <pence> I also remember opening The Rack in a starter pack I bought from a hobby store later
[18:19:31] <apreche> i can't remember
[18:19:50] <apreche> but I wanted to have black vise and also the rack
[18:19:58] <apreche> but i kept getting one and not the other
[18:20:19] <apreche> then I wanted to combine them with cards that made the other person draw or discard
[18:20:35] <pence> throw megrim on top of that
[18:20:43] <apreche> what's megrim?
[18:20:48] <apreche> I was thinking howling mine type stuff
[18:21:04] <pence> an enchantment that causes an opponent to take 2 damage when they discard a card
[18:21:04] <apreche> WTF year is this card from?
[18:21:12] <apreche> Anything newer than 1995 I'm not going to know
[18:21:33] -!- Neito [Neito!Neito@1209829A.F7B103C7.5E4272EE.IP] has joined #geeknights
[18:21:36] <pence> '98 was the first printing, yeah
[18:23:45] <Neito> I think the only thing worse than Help Desk when there's nothign to do is help desk when there's EVERYTHING to do.
[18:24:37] <Rym> I was obsessed with Millstones
[18:24:42] <Rym> But I never made an effective deck with them
[18:24:44] <hitstun> Oh, Money: The Wasting
[18:24:48] <Rym> Forestwalking Marsh Vipers were my fucking jam
[18:24:57] <Rym> Two poison counters on a successful attack
[18:25:06] <Rym> Forest Hag could turn any land into a forest
[18:25:07] <hitstun> I played that in high school and I have mostly 6th Edition
[18:25:11] <Rym> And could give any creature forestwalk
[18:25:27] <Neito> It's a significanlty different game now, sadly.
[18:25:34] <Rym> Yeah
[18:25:43] <Rym> I also played heavy creature Green decks to decent effect
[18:25:51] <Neito> I know a lot of people just use Cocktrice/OCTGN and play with exclusively older sets to get that old feeling back.
[18:25:55] <Rym> Won a tournament once with an actual Force of Nature
[18:26:04] <hitstun> Whenever I play a Black deck, I still kinda expect Dark Rituals to be an important part of it
[18:26:06] <Rym> Loved that creature
[18:26:29] <hitstun> I never came up with broken stuff like my friends did though
[18:26:30] <Neito> Dark Rit hasn't been printed outside of theme decks in I think a decade now. Makes me sad.
[18:26:33] <pence> we did bullshit about the old man MtG league. Everyone registers their current collection and no new cards can enter the ecosystem...
[18:26:33] <Neito> I loved Dark Rit.
[18:26:50] <Rym> Takklemaggot
[18:26:54] <Rym> If we're talking Black decks
[18:27:26] <Neito> I think Cocktrice can create "packs", so one think /tg/ used to do was say "Ok, you all have X packs of X,Y, and Z sets, you can trade, that's what we're playing for the next year".
[18:27:29] -!- spacejam has quit [Ping timeout: 188 seconds]
[18:27:36] <Neito> That could be fun.
[18:27:48] <Rym> That or Lich
[18:28:00] <Rym> Lich was insane
[18:28:02] <pence> hahaha Lich is pretty awesome
[18:28:40] <Rym> Never saw one played
[18:28:44] <Rym> But people talked about trying
[18:28:52] <Neito> They made a functional reprint of that card called like, Nefarious Lich or something.
[18:28:54] <Rym> One disenchant and you're fucked
[18:29:01] <Neito> I have that one.
[18:29:19] <Neito> http://gatherer.wizards.com
[18:29:20] -!- spacejam [spacejam!spacejam@69C70B9D.AFD2F435.6E8B3ECE.IP] has joined #geeknights
[18:33:41] <pence> http://gatherer.wizards.com aka the doomsday device
[18:34:38] <Neito> Man, there's just something about the old art and storylines that's so much more interesting than the modern stuff
[18:37:36] <pence> I am nostalgic for a lot of the older art, too. Ascension is the closest I can find in a recently published game
[18:37:52] <Neito> Well, IIRC< Ascension was made by old M:TG pros.
[18:40:37] <pence> some of the android netrunner art is weird and idiosyncratic, too... like http://netrunnerdb.com
[18:43:41] -!- Asnabel has quit [Quit: ]
[18:57:15] <apreche> is this cockatrice superior to OCTGN?
[18:57:20] <apreche> becuase OCTGN is garbage
[19:00:58] <Neito> It's prettier, but it ONLY does M:TG, as far as I know.
[19:01:13] <Neito> And I think it's slightly harder to find because of a C&D from Wizards?
[19:01:32] <apreche> yeah, I guess they're only going to C&D something that's actually good
[19:02:00] <Neito> No, it's up. I'm wrong.
[19:02:21] <apreche> nice
[19:07:24] <pence> I used to use uh... Apprentice, which was a much nicer interface than octgn IMO
[19:29:01] <GauntletWizard> Have atom chips evolved to be able to transcode real-time 1080p yet?
[19:29:23] <GauntletWizard> I am tempted by http://www.newegg.com as my existing server motherboard has died
[19:32:01] <apreche> they still make Atom chips?
[19:32:17] <GauntletWizard> no
[19:32:22] <GauntletWizard> whatever the successor is
[19:32:27] <GauntletWizard> Avoton?
[19:32:33] <apreche> I thought that whole market segment was dea.d
[19:32:47] <GauntletWizard> low-wattage core chips?
[19:32:54] <GauntletWizard> Nah, it's taken on a weird life
[19:33:04] <GauntletWizard> for a pure storage box, it'd be a no-brainer
[19:33:06] <apreche> I mean, the main use for ITX
[19:33:07] <apreche> was HTPC
[19:33:44] <GauntletWizard> HTPC has been replaced by chromecast, fire stick, etc, sure
[19:33:49] <apreche> that's what I'm saying
[19:33:57] <GauntletWizard> but there's still call for low-power server-like machines
[19:34:14] <apreche> for what?
[19:34:34] <Victor-Frost> File servers?
[19:34:36] <GauntletWizard> the onsite fileserver for construction companies, embedded in all sorts of vans and trucks
[19:34:54] <apreche> a NAS doesn't get it done?
[19:34:55] <GauntletWizard> datacenter warm-storage servers
[19:35:04] <GauntletWizard> these are for NASs
[19:35:18] <Victor-Frost> The fileserver my folks use to host their paperless document system runs on FreeNas on a P4.
[19:35:27] <apreche> but you can just buy a prebuilt NAS thingy
[19:35:32] <apreche> at least when I bought my NAS
[19:35:36] <apreche> it was cheaper than building one
[19:35:44] <Victor-Frost> Unless you have the parts already
[19:35:53] <apreche> sure
[19:36:05] <apreche> anything is more expensive than something you already own
[19:37:32] <GauntletWizard> I don't trust prebuilt nas thingys
[19:37:41] <GauntletWizard> I like running my own raid
[19:37:51] <GauntletWizard> and I want a full linux box
[19:37:59] <GauntletWizard> and I've already got the disks
[19:39:22] <apreche> the prebuilt thingy I got is pretty good
[19:39:40] <apreche> haven't had any problems at all
[19:39:44] <apreche> does everything
[19:39:46] <apreche> evne print serving works
[19:41:33] <Victor-Frost> Now that's a feat.
[19:42:29] <Neito> I wouldn't think "Working as advertised" would be a feat, but I sadly know better.
[19:43:39] <apreche> the one I have is a readynas NV+
[19:43:48] <apreche> it's not elegant at all
[19:43:57] <apreche> but it does work, and was way cheaper than building one
[19:43:59] <apreche> still had to buy drives
[19:44:09] <apreche> but the actual hardware is what really put it over the top
[19:44:10] <apreche> small
[19:44:10] <apreche> quiet
[19:44:19] <apreche> easy to hot swap drives if ever it is necessary
[19:47:27] <GauntletWizard> Does it support ZFS?
[19:47:57] <GauntletWizard> I'm going to spend more on replacing the mobo of this machine (presuming I can't get the warranty to work, which seems a safeish assumption) than I would on a NAS solution...
[19:48:01] <GauntletWizard> but I like the flexibility
[19:51:07] <Victor-Frost> Secret Santa Sign Up: https://docs.google.com
[19:54:11] <GauntletWizard> Beyond being a NAS, the box also acts as a vmware host, a minecraft server, a UT server, and various others
[19:58:01] <Rym> FWIW, standard RAID algorithms are painfully obsolete ;^)
[19:58:13] <Rym> RAID-5 is best left dead in a gutter
[19:59:51] <Neito> Just RAID-0 everything forever, right? :3
[20:00:17] <Rym> If you must use a standard non-proprietary RAID level, 10 is industry standard now ;^)
[20:00:28] <Rym> 2 and 4 were never used
[20:00:35] <Rym> 3 and 5 are slow and obsolete
[20:00:44] <Neito> I always mix that up. 1+0 is mirrored and then stripped, right?
[20:00:59] <Rym> Make stripes, mirror the stripes

[20:44:01] <pence> if I don't see you there, I still need you to hold me accountable for skiing this season
[20:44:13] <Rym> Oh, I will ;^)
[21:26:51] <GauntletWizard> apreche: x-raid does not solve the problems, and is equivalent to raid-5
[21:27:12] <GauntletWizard> You really need a filesystem-level raid and +2 parity on anything you care about
