My Little Pony in Continuance

Tonight on GeekNights, much as we did with the ongoing Adventure Time series, we review the many episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic that have come out since our original 2011 review of the show. It's still good (not as good as the comics, but still good), and we're still into it. In the news, Netflix puts anime in its correct non-anime categories, Lupin III continues to be most excellent of late, culminating in The Italian Game, and Pokemon celebrates its 20th anniversary with some off-the-hook stuff.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Miyazaki's Laputa: Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ) having last night seen it again thanks to the IFC. It is a subtle and wonderful movie, and you do yourself a disservice to have not seen it. We also attempt to rank ALL of the Ghibli movies. In other news, FUNimation is inexplicably launching a cable anime network, and Fakku is kickstarting a release of Maeda's Urotsukidoji manga in English.

Inuyashiki

Hiroya Oku's Inuyashiki is described as a "slice of life suspense science fiction seinen manga series" on Wikipedia. It is fantastic, and you'll understand it's full power within 30 pages give or take. In the news, the great Shigeru Mizuki, known primarily in the US for Kitaro, has passed away at 93. The Anime News Network 2015 Megapoll is underway (I suggest you vote for Yurikuma and One Punch Man). Build-a-bear moves into Pikachu territory.

Descender

Descender (Jeff Lemire, Dustin Nguyen) is a comic that you should all read, and is the topic of tonight's GeekNights. Part Alien, part Astroboy, part Aliens, part Ghost in the Shell, part Prometheus, part Independence Day, this beautiful fast-paced action sci fi comic is some A+ sequential art so far. Lemire has a golden touch, as we've been a fan since Essex County back in 2007. Sony already optioned the movie rights.

In other news, PAX East badges/hotels went live and sold out today (but you can still go to PAX South), all the collected works of Miyazaki are available on boo ray, and Adventure Time continues to be excellent with The Stakes.

Anime is just Animation

Tonight on GeekNights, we probably anger a lot of people talking about how anime-specific fandom is no longer usefully distinguished from general animation fandom and it's really only Americans who flip out so much about it. This is in light of anime just being available on Hulu now, Netflix making its own anime, and AkibaExpo being a disaster that fell apart before our very eyes.

Colorful and Rick and Morty

Scott watched Colorful. Rym watched Rick and Morty. On GeekNights tonight, we bring you reviews of both. Rym has restored the copyright-blocked GeekNights Presents: Utena episodes. Yowamushi Pedal gets a third season! Hulu is now the go-to source of anime now that there is an ad-free tier. (We can finally give those Slayers DVDs back). Manglobe is bankrupt. Cats are hustling.

One Punch Man Preview

One Punch Man - the anime TV series - is about to air. We here on GeekNights have watched one episode (poorly subtitled and badly bootlegged) to confirm that it is everything you could ever have hoped it to be. Descender (Jeff Lemire) is out, as it the latest Saga trade. Rym and Emily are deeply into the surprisingly human Bojack Horseman. Tons of old Streamline dubs of 90s OAVs like 8 Man After are just hanging out on youtube.
