Burning Con 2013

Tonight on GeekNights, we tell you a little about Burning Con 2013: The Pentaclagon! We also have some photos from the con, including the Burning Photobooth! In the news, don't buy Castellan, and don't buy Dungeon Roll.

Also, be sure to check out the newly updated GeekNights Forum! It's an Ivory Tower that proves many of our points. Also check out our continuing series: GeekNights Presents Utena! It just updated!

Hanabi

Tonight on GeekNights, we reveiew the delightful Hanabi from Antoine Bauza, itself having just been awarded the Spiel des Jahres for 2013! It's a co-op, information sharing game that avoids all of the problems of games like Pandemic or Shadows over Camelot. We also briefly review the extremely disappointing and woefully uninspired Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! and realize that Civilization V: Brave New World will destroy our lives.

We're going to be on a minor hiatus until we're back from ConnectiCon and PAX Australia, so be sure to check out our videos, twitters (@apreche, @schezar, @geeknights), and various assorted Internets while we're gone! And, if you're in Melbourne, let us know and come say hi!

King of Tokyo

Tonight on GeekNights, returning triumphant from Anime Boston, we review Richard Garfield's King of Tokyo. It's a great warmup game, but it made us realize that far too few of you have ever played Yahtzee. We also discuss the new Xbox1 and the GTX780. Stay tuned for ConnectiCon and PAX Australia!

Ground Floor and some PAX

Tonight on GeekNights, we triumphantly return from PAX East 2013! Or, at least one of us does. Rym was laid low with a serious flu post-PAX from which he is still recovering, and you'll hear his various coughing fits reconstructed for you in glorious mp3 form! We talk a bit about Shovel Knight, Ducktales Remastered, Scott's enjoyment of X-Com now that he's playing it, PAX East, and our extremely disheartening experience with Ground Floor. It feels like it should be a good game, but nonintuitive mechanics in key areas obfuscate its surprisingly light core, and more importantly, it takes far to long to play for what it is.

Glory to Rome

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the difficult to acquire re-skin of Glory to Rome. It's a solid game, and worth owning. Just make sure you don't accidentally buy the old one. Also, NVIDIA launches the GTX Titan video card, and Valve officially launches Linux Steam.

Impressions of Android:Netrunner

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a bit about Android: Netrunner, which we've been playing of late. In the news, HOOOOCKEYYYYY is back, Kotaku has some forward looks at five coming tabletop games, and Dungeons & Dragons classic books are available online as PDFs for reasonable prices.

How to Not Suck at Taking Your Turn

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the finer points of taking one's turn in another installment of our long running series: How to Not Suck. It turns out there are ten simple things one must do to take one's turn in a timely fashion.

  1. Ask rules questions immediately
  2. Pay attention to the game
  3. Consider moves when it's not your turn
  4. Recognize when a decision is arbitrary
  5. Recognize when a decision is effectively arbitrary due to your own lack of processing ability
  6. Develop directional heuristics
  7. If in doubt, maximize the simplest available positional heuristic
  8. Use pattern recognition to develop heuristics
  9. Learn mechanical skills (e.g., shuffling cards)
  10. Develop a gaming lexicon
In the news, Street Fighter X Mega Man is real, and the Wii-U has ridiculous time-based restrictions in Europe. Also, we'll be presenting at MAGFest, and ConnectiCon panel submissions are coming soon!
